2019-2020 InfoVis project
Instructions
You are expected to:
- form groups (5 persons) (22 nov.)
- formulate questions that should be answerable using information present in the data set (see below) and design visualizations that can help answer those questions (6 dec.)
- implement some of those visualizations (using d3.js or anything else that you code)
Data sets
The data sets will be a subset of the World Inequality Database.
A first batch of data (income shares for 40 countries) is available on https://gricad-gitlab.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/blanch-ens/2019-wid/.
You can download an archive of the data that includes some sample of static visualizations with d3.
15 dec. 2019 update added gini index and average income per yea and country, check the repository.
Other sources of data:
- Gapminder gather data about various domains (health, economy, demographics…)
- OECD econometric data
- World bank development indicators
Readings
Some (possible) questions
- How to effectively visualize an income/wealth distribution?
- How to compare 2/n distributions?
- How did income/wealth distribution evolve over time worldwide/in a specific region/in a specific country?
- How are inequalities distributed across space?
- add your own questions
Defense
Expectations
You are expected to present your visualizations, and to explain how they help answer the questions you choose to investigate.
You are expected to justify the design choices for the visualizations, i.e., why is the visual mapping you choose are pertinent given the data at hand and the insights you are looking to find.
You are expected to send by email at blanch@imag.fr the material used for the defense.
