Computer Graphics (6 ECTS)

Content

Computer graphics and AI have a symbiotic relationship, each benefiting from and contributing to the advancement of the other. Computer graphics provide crucial data and simulations for training AI models, while AI techniques enhance the realism, efficiency, and capabilities of computer graphics, leading to significant advancements in both fields. The synergy between them continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in visual computing and AI applications. The Computer Graphics II MoSIG course is dedicated to the three key subdomains of Computer Graphics, Rendering, Geometric Modeling and Animation. The rendering part focus on how to display a picture on the screen, so that it is realistic for AI training or it looks pleasing to the viewer in a videogame. The topics presented include Materials and BRDFs, Shadow and shadow maps, Global illumination techniques, Monte-carlo ray-tracing , Level-of-Detail techniques and Expressive rendering. The main rendering techniques are implemented by the students in three homeworks. In Geometric Modeling we introduce discrete and continuous models, including meshes, NURBS surfaces, Subdvision surfaces. We develop differential metrics on these models, which are crucial for designing smooth geometry as well as for AI training. Practical homeworks help understand the theoretical concepts behind these models. The animation part includes Keyframe animation, Forward and inverse kinematics, Motion planning, Rigging and skinning, and Mass spring systems.

Objective

The overall objective is to acquire advanced knowledge in Geometric Modeling, Animation and Rendering. In Geometric Modeling, the objective is to understand the theory behind subdivision curves and surfaces. In Animation the goal is to learn the 12 principles of traditionnal animation. In Rendering the objective is to learn and implement the main techniques for real-time rendering, photorealistic rendering and expressive rendering.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge in linear algebra and computer graphics

Evaluation

Written exam (note EXAM1) and homeworks (note CC)
